My last monograph, Becoming Muslim in mainland Tanzania, 1880-2000, examined the dynamics of the spread of Islam in rural Tanzania. My forthcoming monograph, The politics of poverty in Africa, focuses on the reasons why failed stratagems tend to recur in rural development, and why the rural poor tend to be blamed for failure.
