I am a specialist in modern East African history, with a focus on the history of Islam, the aftermath of slavery and the politics of development in Tanzania. After earning my PhD from Cambridge University, I worked in in London (SOAS), Vancouver (SFU) and Cambridge (Peterhouse) before coming to Gent University in 2016.

I teach in both the History and the African Studies Departments at Gent University, and am happy to supervise research students working on any topic in modern Eastern African and/or Islamic history.
